Do You Know Four Types Of Search Engines?

When you use a keyword to search for a topic, you are using a piece of software known as a search engine. Whereas directories are lists of websites classified by topic (as offered by portals), search engines allow you to find specific documents through keyword searches and menu choices. The type of search engine you use depends on what you are looking for.

There are four types of such search tools:
·       Human-organized
·       Computer-created
·       Hybrid
·       Metasearch

Human-Organized Search Sites:

If you are looking for a biography of Apple computer founded steve jobs, a search engine based on human judgment is probably your best bet. More and more, the top search sites on the web are going in the direction of human indexing. Whereas computers can’t discriminate in organizing data, humans can judge data for relevance and categorize them in ways that are useful to you. Examples of Human-Organized search sites are Yahoo!, Open Directory, LookSmart.

Computer-created search sites:

If you want to see what things show up next to steve job’s name or every instance in which it appears, a computer-created search site may be best. These are assembled by software “Spiders” that crawl all over the web and send back reports to be collected and organized with little human intervention. The downside is that computer-created indexes deliver you more information than you want. Examples of Computer-created search site are Northern Light, Excite, WebCrawler etc.

Hybrid search sites:

Hybrid search sites generally use humans supplemented by computer indexes. The idea is to see that nothing falls through the cracks. All the Principal sites are Hybrid: AOL Search, AltaVista, MSN Search, and Netscape Search. Google Ranks listings by popularity as well as by how well they match the request. GOTo ranks by paid the most money for top billing.

Metasearch Sites:


Metasearch sites send your query to several others different search tools and compile the results so as to several other broadest view. Examples of Metasearch sites are SuperCrawler, SavvySearch, Dogpile, ProFusion, The Big Hub, C4 TotalSearch.
